Balance from the Beach

While vacationing with my family on the beach this week, I learned some valuable lessons. I struggle with work-life balance, and even forcing myself to vacation is a struggle. I am always going, thinking, or planning and it is difficult to turn off my mind (and my email). However, this vacation has taught me some balance from the beach.

1. Breathe in the Breeze

Take the time to shut everything off, close your eyes and just breathe. Smell the air, clear your mind, and focus on the present. Quieting your mind, being still and supplying your mind with fresh oxygen can be stimulating, invigorating and relaxing at the same time.

2. Avoid the Jellyfish

When you swim where Jellyfish live, you might get stung if you are not looking. So, keep your eyes open to see when the electrifying tentacles of negativity start to creep up on you in the waves. Sometimes you will get stung, but that is a lesson to be more proactive in avoiding those beautiful, yet, painful creatures.  It would be a shame to avoid the beach altogether because you are fearful of getting stung, for you would miss out on some pretty amazing waters.

3. Sand is Everywhere

The feel of sand between your toes on a beach is glorious, but it does not have the same appeal in your bed. Sand can be fun as you use creativity and resources at your disposal to build sand castles, dig holes, and bury mermaids. However, if you are not careful, your sandy work can follow you around and get into every nook and cranny. Therefore, it is important to shake out your towels, clean off your shovels, and shower off the sand from your day before you go home.

4. Sunlight is Powerful

Sunlight provides you with vitamins, warmth, and hopefully a tan. However, you cannot always be in the sunlight, so wear sunblock and know when it is time to move into the shade. The heat of the sun can feel glorious when you are ready for some Vitamin D, but too much can leave you scorched and in pain. Recognize when you are getting burned (out), and cool off with a swim break.

5. Close your Mouth in the Waves

We all get knocked over by the waves, so embrace your boogie board of life and just ride it out joyfully. However, when the wave comes,  it is best to just keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, you might find yourself choking on the salty water, or eating a mouthful of sand. Remember the taste of salt on your tongue, as a reminder that keeping your mouth shut could save you from gritty teeth all day.

No matter where you are, go find your Balance from the Beach!
